At ABC Dentistry & Orthodontics, dentistry for children is about more than bright, healthy smiles. Dr. Hill, Dr. Brodersen, and Dr. Sam want to make sure your child’s visit is rewarding, fun and anxiety-free! Our pediatric dentists take extra time to earn the trust of both you and your child, to make each trip to the dentist a pleasant, calm experience.
We recommend scheduling your child’s first dental appointment as soon after they cut their first tooth as possible. That way we can ensure their smile stays healthy from the very beginning!
We encourage you and your child to ask questions and are always happy to address any concerns you have as a parent. Our kids dentistry team focuses on gentle reassurance and using simple explanations to answer your child’s questions. If your child is anxious, ask us about our sedation dentistry options that could make their appointment more relaxing.
What's the Difference Between General Dentists and Pediatric Dentists?
ABC Dentistry & Orthodontics has board-certified pediatric dentists on staff to care for your children's pearly whites! Unlike general dentists, pediatric dentists have additional, specialized training for treating infants, children, and teenagers, making them a top choice for young dental patients. They focus on the ins and outs of growing mouths and also receive training in child behavior, special healthcare needs, and pediatric health.
Our pediatric dentists can't wait to get your child started on a journey to a lifelong healthy smile!

Our practice is designed to make your child comfortable and excited to visit the dentist.
We offer a warm, kid-friendly waiting area, stocked with storybooks and toys for all ages, plus a movie theater complete with stadium seating! If your child needs a quiet place to work on homework or other projects, we have a dedicated space for that too.
Our kids dentistry team is trained to give your child all the time they need to build rapport with our dentists and adjust to the dental environment. Our whole staff is trained to be gentle and engaging, making dental appointments something your child will look forward to! We even provide a take-home dental hygiene bag post-appointment.
We follow guidelines from the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry stating that all children should attend their first dental appointment by their first birthday or when their first tooth erupts - whichever comes first!

Preventive Kids Dental Checkups
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentists (AAPD) advises that children be seen for a checkup every 6 months. These visits allow our Schaumburg childrens dentistry team to closely monitor new changes in your child’s mouth and ensure that you, as a parent, have the information you need to promote continued oral health in your child. We may suggest additional checkups if your child is more susceptible to cavities, or if your child is showing signs of orthodontic problems.
Dental fluoride treatments are safe and effective in decreasing the amount of cavities in children. Our Schaumburg pediatric dentists often recommend fluoride treatments along with dental sealants to protect your child’s teeth. Fluoride acts as a shield for the tooth’s outer enamel and can actually reverse early dental decay in some children.
Protective Dental Sealants
Protective dental sealants are thin coats of plastic painted onto your child’s back teeth to protect their deep grooves and depressions from accumulating bacteria and food particles. Studies show that 88% of cavities in American school-aged children are caused by food and bacteria being caught in rear molars.
At ABC Dentistry & Orthodontics, we typically apply a protective sealant to your child’s back teeth, premolars and molars. The sealant will last for several years, but we will continue to check it during your child’s regular dental appointments.
Complimentary PRO-SYS Toothbrushes
Does your child always look forward to their dental goodie bag? We now include PRO-SYS tapered toothbrushes in our take-home bags! PRO-SYS toothbrushes earned the coveted Seal of Acceptance from the ADA, and have aseptic handles that harbor less bacteria than conventional toothbrushes. Not only that, but with every PRO-SYS toothbrush purchased, the company donates a toothbrush to a child in need through its nonprofit partners. More reasons to smile!
Your child might need a space maintainer if they lose a tooth early or have a baby tooth extracted. If your child needs a space maintainer, Dr. Edgcomb will custom make it to fit your child’s mouth. Its purpose is to keep the space where the baby tooth was lost open in order to allow the permanent tooth to come into place.
Baby teeth are vital to the healthy development of adult teeth, jawbones and muscles. Often, if a space maintainer is not used, your child’s other teeth can shift into the open space and more invasive orthodontic treatment might be needed in the future.
Tooth Colored Fillings
Treatment for cavities in children depends on the severity of decay, as well as each child’s age and risk of future cavities. At ABC Dentistry & Orthodontics, we typically treat cavities with discreet, effective tooth-colored fillings.
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped covering cemented to a badly damaged tooth to restore the shape and functionality of the tooth. Our pediatric dentists may recommend a dental crown for your child’s tooth if it has a large cavity, was broken or chipped due to trauma, or if the tooth hasn’t developed correctly.
Unfortunately, sometimes a child’s tooth may be too badly decayed to save. In this case, our pediatric dental team will perform a gentle tooth extraction. An extraction may also be recommended if the tooth is severely fractured or is crowding other healthy teeth.
Baby teeth are not as strong as adult teeth. If your child’s tooth suffers a large cavity, the bacteria can damage the pulp inside the tooth, causing pain and inflammation.
When the soft tissue inside the pulp chamber becomes infected or inflamed, our pediatric
dentists might recommend a pulpotomy. Instead of removing the entire tooth, our kids dentistry team will place a medicated filling into the pulp chamber to try to keep the remaining pulp inside the tooth alive and healthy.
Athletic Mouth Guards
If you or your child are involved in any type of sports, wearing a custom-fitted mouth guard is one of your best pieces of insurance. Not only does it protect teeth, but it also reduces the risk of concussion.
Special Needs Dentistry for Children
Our pediatric dentists have completed extensive training necessary to work with patients who have special needs. Our entire team has the knowledge, patience and expertise to help your child through their entire visit!
