Complimentary Orthodontic Consultation
Is orthodontic treatment right for you or your child? Get all of the answers you
need about braces from one of our experienced, board-certified orthodontists!
A straight smile is a healthier smile! Whether you are interested in orthodontic treatment for yourself or your family member, Dr. Katie Edgcomb can help find the right braces and treatment. She is experienced in one and two-phase orthodontic treatment, and interdisciplinary adult and orthognathic surgery cases.
Dr. Katie Edgcomb routinely uses braces, Invisalign, and growth modification techniques to treat our patients at ABC Dentistry & Orthodontics. An orthodontic evaluation allows Dr. Edgcomb to assess your child’s oral development. During the evaluation, Dr. Edgcomb will inspect your child’s teeth and gums, as well as the bones and muscles in your child’s mouth to evaluate the need for correction with braces.
An orthodontic evaluation will give you the ability to plan ahead for your child’s future dental needs, including whether he or she may need clear or metal braces.
Clear Invisalign Braces
Aligning your teeth makes them easier to clean, but it also has a huge impact on your appearance. As an Invisalign clear braces provider, Dr. Edgcomb can help you straighten your teeth without having to to use traditional brackets and wires.
Clear, removable Invisalign braces make it easier for you to keep your smile clean and avoid problems like tooth decay and gum disease. This advanced system uses removable plastic trays that are easy to care for and comfortable to wear. No one will ever have to know they’re there!
iTero® Intraoral Digital Scanner
Dr. Edgcomb uses the iTero® digital scanner with patients undergoing orthodontic or other restorative dental treatments. This dental technology Dr. Edgcomb can use the iTero® scans to take a closer look at your smile and show you how your possible smile outcome side-by-side with your current smile! iTero® scans are fast, comfortable, and accurate, which makes the entire process more efficient.
This advanced dental technology also features a touch-screen tool that lets Dr. Edgcomb make real-time adjustments to the possible smile outcome for each patient, so if you’re not satisfied with what you’re seeing, our Schaumburg dental team can make a few adjustments to your proposed treatment.
Damon System Braces
Metal braces are still the most common method used to straighten teeth. Dr. Edgcomb may recommend braces if your child suffers from crooked teeth, crowded teeth, jaw problems or a misaligned bite.
ABC Dentistry & Orthodontics offers patients passive self-ligating Damon System braces, which can move teeth faster and with fewer adjustments. This revolutionary system uses shape-memory wires that are directly attached to the brackets, instead of being attached by elastic rings. The benefits of Damon System braces also include less pain and discomfort and improved oral health.
Waterpik® Water Flosser
Dental technology has significantly improved how we can help keep our teeth and gums healthly at home. Beyond toothbrushes and floss, many of our orthodontic patients have found the Waterpik Water Flosser to be a vital tool to keep their smiles healthy and beautiful.
Waterpiks are also ideal for patients with traditional metal braces, since the water can reach behind braces and flush away bits of food brushing alone can't reach. A Waterpik, can also remove bacteria and food particles from deep gum pockets and around braces better than dental floss alone.

Phase I and Phase II Orthodontic Treatments
If Dr. Edgcomb performs your child’s orthodontic evaluation and concludes that treatment is necessary, we will complete it in a two-phase approach. Phase I is usually between the ages of 6 and 10, while they still have most of their primary teeth.
Dr. Edgcomb may recommend expansion, an active retainer or partial braces as part of the Phase I treatment. The goal of Phase I is to better prepare your child’s jaws to make room for their permanent teeth and improve the relationship between their upper and lower jaws.
Phase II occurs later on, dependent on your child’s growth. The goal of this phase is to make sure each tooth is located in the best location possible to function properly. Phase II usually involves full upper and lower braces for your child and will not begin until all of your child’s permanent teeth have erupted. Phase II treatment usually lasts for a minimum of 24 months depending on the individual needs of your child.
Your child might need a space maintainer if they lose a tooth early or have a baby tooth extracted. If your child needs a space maintainer, Dr. Edgcomb will custom make it to fit your child’s mouth. Its purpose is to keep the space where the baby tooth was lost open in order to allow the permanent tooth to come into place.
Baby teeth are vital to the healthy development of adult teeth, jawbones and muscles. Often, if a space maintainer is not used, your child’s other teeth can shift into the open space and more invasive orthodontic treatment might be needed in the future.
Caring for your smile after orthodontic treatment is a vital part of making sure your teeth don’t move after your orthodontic treatment. This is a critical follow-up stage that usually involves wearing a retainer. At ABC Dentistry & Orthodontics we offer several different types, all of which are custom-made to fit your smile.
